We have blue laminate countertops in master bathroom, about 15 ft long with two sink cutouts. Current countertops are in good condition, would just prefer a cultured marble or something else. Before I call in a contractor for estimates, does anyone have an idea of the various costs per foot of cultured marble, granite, corian, etc. Thanks for any information.

A rough estimate will be about $50 per square foot so I expect it will cost you in the $1,000 to $1,500 range. Material and installation.

Cultured marble tops are not available for that odd length. They are made to all the exact sizes of your industry standard sized cabinets, then plus 1 inch for overhang.

I believe you said you have laminate. I'm sure it's old and many think bad of laminate but don't. Take a 2nd look at the awesome look and feel of today's generation of laminates. Many have the look and feel of real granite for half the cost. And you have a choice of over a thousand colors.

If you go granite or solid surface (what everyone likes to call Corian), just know with the length you have, you WILL have a seam. Granite slabs come about 9' and solid surface about the same. I am pretty sure you can get 16' lengths of laminate.

Laminate (which everyone likes to call Formica) I would like you to take a look at Wilsonart brand. Not Formica brand. Wilsonart is much lest costly then Formica and just as good. And guess what. As of this month there is a brand new invention. I just put it in my showroom. You can now get undermount sinks on laminate tops, all one piece seamless, just like you see with solid surface.

Custom laminate tops that you order, pick up yourself and install yourself cost about $15 LF. I'd say you are about $250 plus the 2 sinks. For granite you have to buy the whole slab to get your 15 LF out of and using the basic 10 lowest cost granite you will be at $400 and then you have to pay for fabrication plus sinks. Solid surface is just about the same plus a tad.

If you go to Home Junkpo or the other blue store you can more then double those costs. Look up a Wilsonart Dealer in your area. Maybe a counter top dealer if you have to.

Keep in mind your long laminate top is too long for you to transport so the store will have to deliver it. If your vanity is between walls you will have to get a very very specific measurement then minus a tad so it fits in. Make sure your walls are semi square. Then your back and side splashes. But you can do this all yourself. If you do granite or SS then some one else has to do everything from measure to deliver to install.

Finally I must add....are you sure your vanity cabinets are ok? A nice new top will make old cabinets look even worse. Consider this.

Good luck

While I don't like stone tops in the kitchen, i think they are great in the bath. Figure $100/ft of linear counter fabricated and installed, plus this is a great opportunity to get some cool new under counter mounted bowls and fixtures. Consider a drop hole into a sink base for trash. A commercial liquid soap dispenser. And, of course, a stone backsplash. I like real granite. I would avoid marble. Synthetic stone is an abomination. The natural grain of real stone cannot be even approached by the "artists" who create that crap.

Thanks for your input. The house was built in 2006, so cabinets are fairly new. Actually they are white laminate. There is basically nothing wrong with the countertops, I just don't like the plain blue color.

Bowls are under counter mounted.

If you don't mind having laminate counters, have a new layer of laminate in a color you like installed directly over the blue ones. It will be the easiest, least expensive and least messy to do.

You would remove the faucets, rough up the existing laminate, glue down a new layer of laminate and reinstall the faucets. Since the sinks are under-mounted you don't have to mess with them at all.

For a quick fix you might do a kit and simply apply a new coating. I have done this with great success. Only would cost you about $75 and a good solution.

We had a master bath vanity built (5 feet long) - and opted for laminate (granite look) counters. We put granite in two of the guest bathrooms, but in the master I use hairspray. I didnt' want to use hairspray over granite....the laminate is beautiful, easy to clean - all earth tones with a little creamy background. I recommend laminate for a master. As DesertSun said - there are some beautiful laminates on the market.
